Big Huge Travel Blog

Hello and welcome to Lee and Rachael’s travel blog, designed to let you know what we are up too during our 9 month travel extravaganza around the world!

So far we have booked the tickets and paid for pretty much all of it (don’t ask!), Rachael has finished her job in Devon, Lee is finishing up the data entry work for his contract with the RSPB and we both are getting ready to go…

In our first entry we thought we would let you know where abouts we are planning to go...

The Trip:

PERU
Leaving Heathrow on the 16th of October 2006 (5 year anniversary!!) we fly to LA and then onto Lima in Peru for our first destination, two months conservation work with the Taricaya Research Centre based in the Amazon Rainforest!

The centre is aiming to establish a reserve in the area in order to protect at least a small proportion of the rainforest ecosystem and its variety of wildlife and plants. As part of the conservation work we hope to be recording all our sightings and taking part in numerous projects including tarantula nest mapping, black caiman work, reforestation projects and work with local villagers. We won’t know exactly what projects we will be involved with until we get there so watch this space…

FIJI
After Peru we fly onto Fiji for two weeks of bird watching, walking, snorkelling and scuba diving over Christmas and New Year.

NEW ZEALAND
We arrive in New Zealand on the 6th of January and hope to spend about 4 months touring around visiting friends, whale watching, bird watching and hopefully some conservation work. We have working holiday Visas and so might do some paid work also.

SOUTHERN AFRICA
Our last destination is Southern Africa; here we join up with Laura (Rachael’s sister) to do a three week tour from Cape Town in South Africa to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. The tour will take us through South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and finally into Zimbabwe.

We then fly back to Johannesburg and on home, arriving back in the UK on the 1st of June 2007.
